Meet the Nihue Rao Family

Our center is founded and operated by the Amaringo and Muñoz families, and supported by a warm and welcoming Peruvian and international community. Led by Maestro Ricardo Amaringo, our healers and staff members are dedicated to the well-being, healing and safety of all of our pasajeros.

Meet your Shamans

Ricardo Amaringo

Head Shaman

Maestro Ricardo Amaringo, 58, is the big-hearted Shipibo owner and head shaman of Nihue Rao. He started drinking Ayahuasca at the age of 14 and in his 20s, he completed his first long diet of 2 and a half years with only one thought in mind: to help the world.

If you walk around the center where he lives, eats and works, it’s easy to see that his curandero work is at the center of his life. A declared purist, he is loyal to the shamanic discipline established by his Shipibo ancestors the merayas, curanderos of the highest level, and is determined to practice nothing short of it.

Unlike most shamans, he is generous in his knowledge and patient with those who wish to understand the medicine more. “My job is to educate the world, the plants told me,” he often says, and he is not shy to put it to practice in the integration conversations he holds.

On top of the special relationship he has developed over the years with the plants in his more than 50 diets, Maestro Ricardo has dieted God’s Medicine for one year, which allows him to do in his work what not many shamans can.

To those that want to study shamanism under him, he warmly says: “If you want to learn the medicine, I will teach you like a brother or sister,” and he makes good on his promise. Sharp and kind, he is a gift to anyone wanting to enter this ancestral tradition.

Miguel Muñoz

Shaman

Ricardo’s father in law, Miguel, is the right hand of Maestro Ricardo in ceremony. Through many strict diets and 10 years of experience in the medicine world, Miguel is a strong Maestro in his own right. Father of eight, he is a caring, humble man that puts his heart where he puts his ícaros.

Filacio Muñoz

Shaman

Ricardo’s brother-in-law and Miguel’s son, Filacio, brings the gentle singing touch to our maloca. His soothing yet powerful ícaros are sure to speak to your heart as they bring you closer to the person you wish to be. We are yet to know what he looks like without a smile on, and we hope we never will.

Oscar Vasquez

Shaman

Miguel’s brother in law, Oscar, is a wealth of medicine knowledge with nearly 40 years of experience with ayahuasca. Moved by a big desire to help, Oscar started dieting solo at the age of 18. His calm approach and beautiful voice won’t go unnoticed when you’re sitting in front of him.

Our Staff

Our center is run by a hard-working team from our local village of Llanchama, as well as an international rotational staff, who all ensure that our retreats run smoothly. Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual is supported by administrative, kitchen, cleaning and laundry staff, and a security team. Our international rotational staff consists of the center manager, facilitators, and a Spanish-English translator.

Become a Facilitator

Our Work-Trade Program

For those who are feeling called to be of service and want to learn the medicine through helping others, we offer facilitating and translating opportunities throughout the year.

Being immersed in the flow of the medicine day and night, the facilitator journey is a bit of a diet in itself, a chance for you to learn and become stronger as you support others along their healing path—but you do also get a plant diet in exchange for your work!

If you have some experience in the medicine world and are looking to go deeper, the facilitator or translator role is an excellent opportunity to be exposed to all sides of the process: the medicine, the shaman and the supporter.

The standard program requires a minimum commitment of 3 months: 2 months of work (and drinking!) followed by 1 month of diet.

Ayahuasca is legal in Peru. The Peruvian government declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation, “the traditional knowledge and use of the ayahuasca practiced by the indigenous native communities of the Amazon…”
